5 Benefits Of Playing With Your Pit Bull

Your dog is your best friend, and playing with him is a way to strengthen that bond between you. Plus, it’s loads of fun and can be extremely entertaining. But what you may not know is that playtime isn’t just fun time, and there are several additional benefits to playing with your dog.

1. Alleviates Boredom

Dogs don’t enjoy lying around doing anything all day long. In fact, most dogs can’t wait for their owners to come home from work or school and greet them enthusiastically in the hopes that they might get some playtime. Your dog appreciates any interaction with you, but playtime is the best way to alleviate Boredom.

Keep in mind that a bored dog will get up to mischief. So if your dog is chewing on the furniture or anything he can get his mouth on, he can definitely benefit from some extra playtime. Escape artists often also suffer from extreme Boredom and are simply running away because it is something to do and it’s fun.

2. Training

Just like babies and young children, dogs learn much more from playtime than formal training can teach them. They learn exactly where the boundary between fun and seriousness starts and ends. Dogs also learn when they may be hurting their owner and when to stop. Play is also an opportunity for your dog to learn that there are rules that need to be followed. These rules don’t only apply to the game being played but also to their overall behavior and what is expected of them.

For example, if you are playing tug-of-war with a toy and your dog gets a little too close to biting your hand or accidentally bites, stop the game immediately. The dog will quickly learn that you don’t like that behavior, and if he wants to play the game, he needs to be careful not to overstep those boundaries.

3. Exercise

Play is a great exercise for dogs, especially dogs that don’t enjoy going for walks or are confined to an apartment or small living area. If your dog is overweight, it is much easier to interest him in a game of fetch than to drag him along on a leash.

He will get plenty of exercises and will shed those extra pounds much faster in conjunction with a diet plan. A fit dog at their ideal weight is happier and healthier overall.

4. Stress Relief

Just like humans, dogs are exposed to stress every day of their lives. And just like humans, they need an outlet to alleviate that stress. In fact, dogs are far more prone to stress than most humans and often have difficulty coping. A dog that won’t stop barking is shy or skittish is showing signs of stress. Playing with a dog has been found to help alleviate their stress and, in turn, has a calming and relaxing effect on the human.

Dog owners who play with their dogs for just five minutes a day have been found to have reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.

What better way to end a stressful day at work than spending some playtime with your best friend?

5. Mental Stimulation

Our dogs are far more intelligent than most people give them credit for. They love to learn new tricks and to be challenged. What better way to do that than to provide mental stimulation through play. Be inventive with your games and toys for pit bulls with new activities to keep his mind active. Not all playtime with your dog requires a physical expenditure of energy.

That said, some rules need to be applied to playtime in order for you and your dog to get the greatest benefit:

  • Don’t overdo it. Set a routine and play with your dog at the same time every day. This will prevent them from beginning to treat you like a toy and think that it’s playtime every time they see you.
  • Firm rules and discipline should form part of playtime. Make sure that your dog is learning those boundaries, where the line has been drawn, and when to stop.
Remember that playtime is supposed to be fun, so don’t go overboard with the play’s learning and discipline aspect.

Believe it or not, but pit bulls are much more well-tempered than many other breeds you may be thinking to choose from. They are one of the highest available. This makes them a much better option for those seeking a dog that will be a good option for an experienced and inexperienced dog owner alike. As you can see from this study, they scored very high on the temperament test [1].

2. They Love Their Owners

Like many other breeds, you will find that one of the things to love about pits is the fact they love and get so attached to their owners. They are extremely good to their owners, and they want to do just about anything to please them. When you get yourself this breed, you know that you are getting a true companion who will do anything for you. They are not naturally aggressive as some would like you to believe. It’s largely the opposite. As long as they are socialized properly (like any other breed), they can be extremely friendly, and they love to be around their owners.

Pit Bulls are very athletic dogs and can sprint like no other.

3. You Will Have Issues That You Have To Deal With

Unfortunately, society has deemed pit bulls as aggressive dogs. Because of this, you will typically find it much more difficult being an owner of a pit. This also makes it even more important for you to properly raise your dog. After all, your dog will be setting an example for other pits. Therefore, you want to ensure that you properly socialize your dog to keep him or her from acting out or showing any signs of aggression. You may find it difficult to find a place that accepts pits, including where you live and even where you play. Therefore, you want to keep this in mind before adopting one.

Pit bull dogs are extremely large and energetic. Because of this, they require a lot of exercise. To keep your dog happy, you will need to exercise him or her a lot. They will not be the ideal choice for those looking for a dog low on energy that requires little maintenance. Due to the exercise requirements, you could say that pits are relatively high maintenance. If you are active and enjoy going outdoors, you will likely find the exercise requirements relatively easy to handle. However, if you rarely go outside or don’t like to exercise, they may be too much for you.

As you can see, there is a lot to learn about the breed. There are plenty of misconceptions that are ruining their image. The fact is, these dogs are naturally lovable, and they love their owners. They are extremely loyal, and they have a great temperament. This makes owning a pit a very good option for experienced dog owners and beginners. Therefore, you will want to be certain you are giving them the exercise they need. They will also require a lot of socialization. As long as you are willing and able to give them everything they need, you will find they are among the best breeds you can adopt. You will find a lot of pits that you can rescue, which makes it a great option to consider. If you are going through a breeder, make sure you are buying from a reputable breeder who treats their dogs properly.

Animal Rescue During the Pandemic

2020 has been a terrible year. The amount of suffering is absolutely unprecedented, in terms of sickness, economic hardship, and loss of loved ones.

I know every person who is going to read this post will have somehow been affected. So, I want to apologize if I come across as insensitive or self-centered when trying to get attention for animal rescue during these times.

But, I have to.

Animal rescue services are also greatly affected by the pandemic. Funding and donations have dropped substantially.

Many volunteers don’t feel safe anymore and have suspended their activities. I don’t blame them. If you live with people who are at high-risk, you need to make the right choice. You can’t just go around putting their health in jeopardy.

We need to find a solution, though. More animals are abandoned than ever. People don’t have the money to care for them or run into issues while living at home with all of their family.

So, look to see if there is something you can do! Even if it’s just a few hours per month. Or, just a few dollars per month. These animals are victims of Covid-19 just like us. And they deserve our help!
